Golgi cells

[Golgi cell]

also: Golgi neurons. Golgi cells are the main inhibitory interneurons in the granule cell layer of adult cerebellum (De Schutter et al, 2000). The cells produce gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which acts on GABA receptors expressed by cerebellar granule cells (excitatory neurons). Golgi cells are the only elements within the cerebellar cortex that inhibit granule cells. Golgi cells also contain glycine, which causes glycinergic inhibition of unipolar brush cells (excitatory neurons). Golgi cells receive serotonin-evoked inputs from another type of interneurons, called Lugaro cells.

Note: do not confuse with Golgi epithelial cells. ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
