Gloverin (13.8 kDa) is an inducible antibacterial insect protein isolated from pupae of the giant silk moth Hyalophora (Axen et al, 1997). A similar or related peptide has been isolated from Trichoplusia ni (Lundström et al, 2002), Bombyx mori (Cheng et al, 2006), greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) (Seitz et al, 2003), and from the old world bollworm (see: P2).

Gloverin inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli at a minimal concentration of 1-3 microM. It binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharides and specifically inhibits the synthesis of vital outer membrane proteins, leading to an increased permeability of the outer membrane. These activities resemble thos of Attacin. Moreno-Habel (2012) have shown that gloverin is also active against baculovirus infection and inactivates ... ... ... ... ...
