these cells are found in the central nervous system. They are considered to represent reactive macrophages or microglial cells. These cells are being referred to also as compound granule cells or fatty granule cells.
Frequently these phagocytic cells are lipid-laden and swollen, having phagocytosed other cells (Das, 1976; Horvath et al, 1992; Mariani et al, 2001).
