Gambicin

Gambicin is a secreted antimicrobial peptide of 61 amino acids and eight cysteines engaged in four disulfide bridges. It is found in a variety of mosquito species (Bartholomay et al, 2003; Ribeiro, 2004; Hillyer et al, 2005; García Gil de Muñoz et al, 2008; Harikrishna et al, 2012).

Gambicin lacks sequence homology with other known proteins. The gene encoding gambicin has been cloned from the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae (Vizioli et al, 2001). Expression of Gambicin is induced by natural or experimental infection with malaria parasites in the midgut, fatbody, and hemocyte-like cell lines. Gambicin has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
