[GRAM domains]
The GRAM domain consists of ~70 amino acid residues and is named after its occurrence in three representative protein families: glucosyltransferases, Rab-like GTPase activators, and myotubularins (Doerks et al, 2000). Proteins harbouring the GRAM domain are widespread throughout the eukaryotes (Jiang et al, 2008) and are thought to be associated with intracellular membranes. These proteins often have a PH domain closely associated with the GRAM domain. Oku et al (2003) have reported that the GRAM domain is essential for proper association of a protein with its target membrane.
