(acronym for Gallus anti morte-1) This gene from the genome of avian adenovirus CELO (CELO virus 9R1 protein, encoded by open reading frame 9R1) encodes a 30 kDa nuclear protein (Chiocca et al, 1997). The protein is an early gene product that is essential for viral replication. Chiocca et al (2002) have shown that GAM-1 effectively inhibits histone deacetylation by histone deacetylase and activates transcription. The cellular transcription factor E4F is a GAM-1 interaction partner (Colombo et al, 2003). The replication defect of CELO virus lacking GAM-11 can be overcome by expressing an interfering histone deacetylase mutant or by treating infected cells with the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A.
