[growth arrest and DNA damage-induced genes] Collective name for 49 genes the expression of which is increased in Chinese hamster CHO cells after UV irradiation. The genes are also being referred to as DDI genes [DNA damage-inducible genes] (Fornace et al, 1988, 1989, 1992).
Many of the transcripts isolated as cDNA are induced also by hydrogen peroxide, and various alkylating agents but not by heat shock, phorbol 12-tetradecanoate 13-acetate, or DNA-damaging agents that do not produce high levels of base damage. The expression of some genes is increased by growth cessation signals including growth arrest by serum reduction, medium depletion, contact inhibition
