Fushi tarazu

abbr. ftz. This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by the CG2047 gene, a member of a larger family of homeotic genes (for the sequence see: (Laughon and Scott, 1984). Fushi tarazu controls the expression of many other developmental genes (Nasiadka and Krause, 1999), is activated by genes caudal and runt, repressed by hairy and tramtrack, and controls its own expression in a positive feedback loop (Dearolf et al, 1989, 1989, 1990; Ingham and Gergen, 1988).

Fushi tarazu ('segment deficient' in Japanese) is involved in segmentation of the fly body during embryogenesis and functions to define even-numbered parasegments in the early embryo (Lawrence et al, 1987). Flies lacking Fushi tarazu exhibit embryos with half the usual number of body segments and die ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
