[Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Lpro protein] this protease is a nonstructural protein encoded in the genome of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus. The protease is located at the N-terminus of the viral polyprotein. It is removed from the growing peptide chain by autocleavage at its own C-terminus (Guarné A et al, 1998). Lb leader protease functions as a papain-like cysteine proteinase (Kuehnel E et al, 2004).
The viral protease is a virulence factor; viral mutants lacking it are attenuated and do not spread beyond the site of infection in vivo (Brown et al, 1996) and do not form plaques in vitro (Chinsangaram et al, 1999). Visser LJ et al (2019) have reported that the protease
