[FMDV 2B protein] This small protein, encoded by foot andmouth disease virus permeabilizes the membrane when expressed in bacteria and mammalian cells and thus has the activity of channel-forming viroporins. The protein mainly localizes in the endoplasmic reticulum. It exhibits cytotoxicity in Escherichia coli. The release of virions from cells infected with FMDV is inhibited by the viroporin inhibitor amantadine. The protein induces intense autophagy in host cells and may be involved in the infection mechanism of FMDV (Ao et al, 2015).
