FTAF

[Fibroblast-derived thymocyte-activating factor] This biochemically uncharacterized factor is produced by fibroblasts. It activates thymocytes and also promotes their proliferation (see also: TAF, thymocyte activating factor).

FTAF inhibits the growth of those cells that produce it (see also: autocrine). This factor, or at least some of the biological activity ascribed to it, may be identical with, or closely related to, one of the molecular forms of IL1 because antisera directed against IL1-beta reduce activity by approximately 50 %.

An FTAF activity found to be released by guinea pig fibroblasts has not been characterized.
