[fibroblast growth factor-24] This factor belongs to the FGF family of growth factors. It has been identified in zebrafish (Draper et al, 2003). It is related to FGF8 and co-expressed with FGF8 in mesodermal precursors during gastrulation. Inhibition of FGF24 function alone has no affect on the formation of posterior mesoderm. Inhibiting FGF24 function in embryos mutant for FGF8 blocks the formation of most posterior mesoderm. Fischer et al (2003) have reported a participation of FGF24 in vertebrate forelimb initiation.
