[Fibroblast-derived neutrophil chemotactic factor] This factor is found in the conditioned medium of fibroblasts. It is a chemoattractant for human neutrophils (see also: Chemotaxis). FDNCF is identical with IL8. FDNCP therefore belongs to the family of chemotactic cytokines known as Chemokines.
FDNCF is referred to also as AVLPR-IL8 (A = alanine, V = valine, L = leucine, P = proline, R = arginine) since its N-terminal end has been extended by 5 amino acids (77 instead of 72 amino acids). Biologically active genuine IL8 is obtained from FDNCF by specific removal of the additional pentapeptide by plasmin.
