F1A-alpha is a protein containing several copies of an ankyrin repeat domain. It has been isolated by virtue of its ability to interact with the cytoplasmic domain of APO-1 (Chan et al, 1999). The protein also interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of TNF receptor 1. F1A-alpha induces cell death by apoptosis in mammalian cells. Co-expression of BCLxL or a dominant negative mutants of either FADD or caspase-9 blocks this effect. Cleavage by a caspase resembling caspase-3 is required to induce apoptosis.
F1A-alpha shares extensive homology with the Caenorhabditis elegans
