this term is being used also to describe a subpopulation of erythrocytes that, during human development, have not completed the switch from fetal gamma-hemoglobin to adult beta-globin and therefore continue to produce HbF [fetal hemoglobin] (Rochette et al, 1994).
Cells that contain HbF survive longer in circulation than non-F-cells (Dover et al, 1978). Sickle cell disease patients with higher HbF levels usually have a milder clinical course (Stevens et al, 1981).
