abbr. EPA (a term with multiple meanings). Generic name given to factors that support in vitro the growth of the normal early erythroid bone marrow progenitor cells BFU-E and CFU-E (see also: hematopoiesis). Such factors, called also EPF [erythroid potentiating factors], were observed originally in conditioned medium of the human monocytic cell line U937 and were found to differ from CSF (colony stimulating factors) or Epo.
Such activities are found also to be secreted into the conditioned medium of other cells
