These cells, described first by Kolmer (1921) and thus referred to sometimes as Kolmer cells, resemble macrophages. Type 2 supraependymal cells described by Coates (1975) are most likely the same cells as epiplexus cells. These cells are being referred to also as Kolmer phagocytic cells, Kolmer epiplexus cells, epiplexus macrophages or intraventricular macrophages. In areas of the third ventricular wall these cells are known as supraependymal cells. Supramarginal cells in the pituitary cleft of the rat (Correr and Motta, 1985) closely resemble these cells
