Epinecidin-1 (FIFHIIKGLFHAGKMIHGLVTRRRH) is an antimicrobial peptide identified in Epinephelus coioides (orange-spotted grouper). The synthetic, amidated epinecidin-1 shows high antimicrobial activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus, Pasturella multocida, Morganella morganii, Aeromonas sobrio, Aeromonas hydrophila, Flavobacterium meningosepticum and Escherichia coli DH5α. Most of these bacteria are known pathogens in aquaculture. Some fungi, such as Candida albicans and Microsporosis sanis, are also sensitive to the synthetic peptide.
In fish, the peptide is found in the gills and intestines. Its mRNA is induced in response to challenge with LPS and poly(I):poly(C). Peptide
