abbr. ECI (a term with multiple meanings). This factor of 75 kDa is purified from serum of a human patient with severe allergic dermatitis, whose eosinophils and neutrophils failed to respond to TNF.
The aminoterminal amino acid sequence identifies ECI as the beta chain of the complement factor C3 (apparently free, but perhaps attached to very small fragments of the alpha chain) (Minkoff et al, 1991).
The serum factor inhibits the cytotoxic function of normal human eosinophils stimulated by TNF and GM-CSF and also inhibits adherence functions of neutrophils. ECI does not protect
