An evolutionarily conserved gene family encoding a group of structurally related extracellular membrane-associated proteins. Members of this family play key roles in intercellular signaling pathways and serve as competence factors during early mesoderm formation in vertebrates (Xenopus laevis, zebrafish, mice, and humans). Members of the EGF-CFC protein family have been implicated as essential cofactors for Nodal signaling. Mutations in EGF-CFC genes have been shown to cause defects in germ-layer formation, anterior-posterior axis orientation, and left-right axis specification.
