This protein is encoded in the genome of human papilloma virus. It causes cell death by apoptosis that may or may not depend on p53. The E6 protein has been shown to bind to p53 and to degrade it (Pan and Griep, 1995). The protein also inhibits apoptosis induced bya expression of BAK (Thomas and Banks, 1998).
