E2-induced gene 5 |
E3L protein |
RNF137 |
||
This protein is encoded by the OV20.0L gene (gene ORFV020) in the genome of the parapoxvirus orf virus (NZ2 strain). It appears to be an interferon resistance gene that is considered a homolog of Vaccinia virus E3L protein. The gene is also referred to as orf virus interferon-resistance gene (OVIFNR).
Expression of the gene in ovine fibroblasts treated with IFN-alpha or IFN-gamma protects the unrelated Semliki Forest virus from the antiviral effects of these interferons (Haig et al, 1998). Recombinant E3L-like protein has been shown to bind double-stranded RNA but not dsDNA, ssDNA or ssRNA (McInnes et al, 1998).
