This protein is encoded in the E3 region of the adenovirus genome. It complexes with the adenovirus-encoded proteins E3-10.4 and E3-14.5. This leads to the downmodulation of TRAIL receptors TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2.
Grant et al (2007) have shown that E3-6.7 is part of an immunosubversive mechanism that inhibits inflammation and protects infected cells from cell death by apoptosis. E3-6.7 shares sequence homology with TACI and inhibits apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) efflux through a direct interaction with the TACI ligand CAML [calcium modulator and cyclophilin ligand protein], a Ca(2+)-modulating protein.
