This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by gene CG3260 and corresponds to the fly ortholog of PDCD2 [programmed cell death-2].
Drosophila Zinc finger protein RP-8 has been shown to be essential for the maintenance of Drosophila hematopoietic stem cells but is largely dispensable in more mature cells (Minakhina and Steward, 2010). Minakhina et al (2014) have reported that Drosophila Zinc finger protein RP-8 is required also in both germline and follicle stem cells in the Drosophila ovary. Expression of human PDCD2 fully rescues the phenotype of fly mutants.
