Note that these cells are different from Dogiel cells.
This cell type is a class of myenteric neurons. At least to subtypes are usually distinguished that differ in morphology and electrophysiological behaviour (Bornstein et al, 1994; Hirst et al, 1974; see also: Furness et al, 1998; Carbone et al, 2014; for a historic overview see also: Brehmer et al, 1999).
Dogiel type 1 neurons are characterized morphologically by a single axon extended from a cell body with short lamellar dendrites. These cells, myenteric S-neurons, have an extensive synaptic input and their electrical properties are similar to those of mammalian autonomic ganglia (Hirst et al, 1974). S neurons are likely to be
