Dogiel neurons |

[cells of Dogiel] This cell type, described originally by Dogiel (1895), and referred to also retinal ganglion cells of Dogiel, are specialized neurons in the avian retina and probably are displaced amacrine cells or displaced ganglion cells of the accessory optic system that project to target nuclei in the anterior portion of the midbrain (see also: Uchiyama and Stell, 2005; Hayhow et al, 1960; Karten et al, 1977; Simpson, 1984). These cells are part of a system that plays a central role in preventing the blurring of images on the retina when an organism is in motion (see also: Schiller, 2010).
