abbr. DIP (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor was isolated from the blood plasma of a 60-year-old woman suffering from pure red cell aplasia. DIP activity is not detectable in the plasma of normal, healthy subjects.
DIP functions as an erythropoiesis-inhibiting protein, selectively inhibiting the growth and differentiation of normal human and murine BFU-E, but not CFU-E cells or murine CFU-GM (see also: CFU; see also: hematopoiesis). The factor also inhibits dimethyl sulfoxide induced
