[Decoy cell]
This term is being used by histologists to describe Papanicolaou-stained cells in urine samples that show "typical" ground-glass intranuclear inclusions (the nuclei of infected cells have been described also as Smudgy, Washed out, Reticulated).
Decoy cells are thought to be of urothelial origin (see also: atypical urothelial cells) and may be found in immunocompromised patients, in particular those at risk for nephropathy due to infection with the BK virus such as patients after kidney transplantation. Different morphologic variants of decoy cells (types 1 through 4) have been described (Singh et al, 2006; Jamboti, 2016).
