[Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule] Human DSCAM is a protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily family. DSCAM is a type-1 transmembrane receptor that contains ten immunoglobulin domains and six fibronectin type-3 repeats in its extracellular domain (Yamakawa et al, 1998). It is overexpressed in the brains of Down syndrome patients and implicated in mental retardation (Saito et al, 2000). Xu Y et al (2011) have reported that mammalian DSCAM deletion in the mouse causes severe hydrocephalus, decreases motor function, and impairs motor learning ability, indicating that mammalian DSCAM gene is critical for the formation of the central nervous system.
