(approved gene symbol) [developmental pluripotency-associated gene 3] The human and mouse genes encoding this protein have been cloned by Bowles et al (2003) who identified DPPA3 as a transcript termed 11M2 and as a marker of pluripotency. This transcript is expressed by gonad primordial germ cells of both sexes and down-regulated in female gonad primordial germ cells as they enter prophase 1 of the first meiotic division. Embryonic mice deficient in germ cells do not express DPPA3. Human DPPA3 expression has been detected only in germ cell tumors, but not in normal testis.
