[DNA fragmentation assay]
any kind of assay that reveals the presence of orderly DNA fragmentation, which is usually taken as an indication of cell death by apoptosis (see: TUNEL assay, Comet assay, DNA laddering, DNA diffusion assay). It should be noted that an orderly pattern of DNA fragmentation is observed also as a consequence of freezing even when caspases, the critical enzymes involved in apoptotic cell death, are blocked (Kok et al, 2002).
