The acronym DN stands for "double-negative". This refers to a population of immature T-cells (thymocytes) that do not express the CD antigens CD4 or CD8. DN2 cells are a subpopulation of these cells (see also: DN1 cells) with the phenotype CD4(-), CD8(-), CD25(+), CD44(+). This cell type has lost the capacity to differentiate into B-cells. It still has the potential to develop into NK-cells and dendritic cells, and T-cells (Wu et al, 1996; Schmitt et al, 2004).
