[high cell density-enhanced PTP-1; Density enhanced phosphatase-1] This human gene has been identified by Ostman et al (1994), who detected expression in the WI-38 human embryonic lung fibroblast cell line. Expression and activity of this enzyme in WI-38 cells dramatically increase in dense cultures relative to sparse cultures. This effect is seen also with another fibroblast cell line. The increase in DEP-1 occurs gradually with increasing cell contact and is initiated before saturation cell density is reached, suggesting that DEP-1 may contribute to the mechanism of contact inhibition of cell growth.
