[dauer formation-4] DAF4 controls a developmental switch in the life cycle of Caenorhabditis elegans, which, upon starvation and overcrowding, enters a developmentally arrested, third-stage dauer larva. The DAF4 gene acts to inhibit dauer larva formation and promote growth and encodes a receptor protein kinase similar to daf-1, activin receptor, and TGF-beta receptor serine/threonine kinases. When expressed in monkey COS cells, the DAF4 receptor binds human BMP2 and BMP4 (Estevez et al, 1993).
