Cytokine inhibitors are cytokine-specific substances that inhibit the biological activities of specific cytokines in a number of different ways. These proteins probably function to buffer or limit the effects of cytokines as part of a regulatory network.
In principle such a specific inhibitor could be an antagonist binding to the same receptor and competing for receptor binding with the genuine cytokine. This type of cytokine inhibitor is exemplified by the IL1-specific receptor antagonists (see: IL1ra, IL1 receptor antagonist) which bind to IL1 receptors without having agonist effects themselves.
