this enzyme, which is composed of three subunits, is part of the respiratory Complex IV located within the mitochondrial inner membrane and constitutes the oxygen-accepting and rate-limiting enzyme of the electron transport chain of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (for overview see: Pierron et al, 2012; Timón-Gómez et al, 2018; Kadenbach, 2020).
The subunits of this enzyme have been shown to be the parent proteins of biologically active fragments (cryptides), designated mitocryptides. See: MCT-COX1, MCT-COX2, and MCT-COX3.
Subunit 7 has been reported to have functions of a hormone and is identical with Chymodenin.
