approved gene symbol: CST8. Cystatin-8 is a secreted protein belonging to the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors. The gene encoding the mouse protein has been cloned and characterized by Cornwall et al (1992, 1999) who showed that its expression is highly restricted to the proximal region of the mouse epididymis and who referred to it as CRES [Cystatin-related epididymal spermatogenic protein]. The human gene has been cloned by Wassler et al (2002).
