Ctenidins are glycine-rich (>70 %) peptides (named ctenidin 1 (119 amino acids), ctenidin 2 (119 amino acids), ctenidin 3 (120 amino acids)) isolated from hemocytes of the spider Cupiennius salei (Wandering spider) (Baumann et al, 2010). Ctenidins are expressed constitutively in hemocytes and to a small extent also in the subesophageal nerve mass. All peptides show activity against the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli .
