This term refers to the selective degradation of secretory granules by fusion with the lysosome, forming autolysosomes. These lysosomal structures have been referred to as crinophagic bodies or multigranular bodies. The process, originally referred to as granulolysis or lysosomial granulolysis observed in A-cells of the endocrine pancreas (Orci et al, 1968), has been described to occur in the mammotroph cells of the anterior pituitary of rats as a mechanism of autophagy involved in the regulation of overproduction of secretory products (Smith and Farquhar, 1966).
Crinophagy has been shown to play a key role in pancreatic Beta-cells
