abbr. CIF (a term with multiple meanings). A biochemically uncharacterized factor derived from confluent cultures of a contact-inhibited hamster melanocytic line. Contact inhibitory factor reversibly restores density-dependent, anchorage-dependent (see also: Anchorage-dependent cells), and serum-dependent growth of malignant hamster, human, and murine melanoma cells and some other malignant cell lines.
Contact inhibitory factor also restores several other normal phenotypic characteristics of these cells, including pigment cell differentiation in amelanotic cells
