The Colton blood group system consists of four antigens, designated Co(a) antigen (renamed Co1 antigen by Arnaud et al, 2010), Co(b) antigen (renamed Co2 antigen by Arnaud et al, 2010), Co3 antigen, and Co4 antigen. All determinants are located on CHIP [channel-forming integral protein] (identical with aquaporin-1; AQP1), which is a water transporter found on erythrocyte membranes and in renal proximal tubules.
