The gene and cDNA have been identified by Hattori et al (2000) and Wilcox et al (2001). claudin-14 is a member of a large multigene family members of which are known to interact with a number of proteins and are involved in signal transduction to and from the tight junction (Krause et al, 2008).
Thorleifsson et al (2009) have reported that sequence variants of claudin-14 are associated with kidney stones and bone mineral density.
Hu et al (2009) have reported that overexpression of claudin-14 causes cell death that appears to be independent of caspase activation and does not show classical features of cell death associated with apoptosis.
