This toxin is produced by various Campylobacter isolates (Eyigor et al, 1999; Pickett et al, 1996; Whitehouse et al, 1998; Young et al, 2000) and various other bacterial species (see: CDT). The toxin is cytolethal to HeLa cells and human T-cells (Mooney et al, 2001) and causes progressive cell distention and cytotoxicity. This is a three-component toxin that induces the irreversible arrest of the mammalian cell cycle in the G2 phase, and ultimately causes cell death by apoptosis. Lara-Tejero and Galan (2000) have reported that one of the subunits of this toxin, CdtB, has the activity of a deoxyribonuclease.
