This cancer-targeting peptide has been identified by phage display library screening in a search for peptides recognizing lung cancer stem-like cells (Yang et al, 2015). Polylactic acid encapsulated docetaxel nanoparticles functionalized with this peptide show high specific binding to pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissue and are effective in a nude mouse model of liver metastasis whereas non-modified nanoparticles loaded with the anticancer agent hardly have an effect in the absence of the targeting peptide. Treatment with targeted drug-loaded nanoparticles significantly decrease the metastatic tumor area in the nude mouse liver.
