[CUB domains]
The acronym CUB stands for Complement proteins C1r/C1s, uEGF (a sea urchin protein with EGF-like domains), and BMP1, proteins in which it was oberved first. This protein domain comprises approximately 110 amino acids. Almost all CUB domains contain four conserved cysteines, which probably form two disulfide bridges (C1-C2, C3-C4). The structure of the CUB domain has been predicted to be a beta-barrel similar to that of immunoglobulins (Romero et al, 1997).
This domain has been found in a number of developmentally regulated proteins, including the dorso-ventral patterning protein tolloid, BMP1, a family of spermadhesins, complement subcomponents Cls/Clr, TSG-6
