[cellular repressor of E1A-stimulated genes] The protein has been renamed CREG1 [cellular repressor of E1A-stimulated genes 1] following the identification of a related protein, CREG2.
This protein has been identified by Veal et al (1998) as a cellular repressor that antagonizes transcriptional activation and cellular transformation by the adenovirus E1A protein, which is known to both activate and repress gene expression to promote cellular proliferation and inhibit differentiation.
Veal et al (2000) have reported that CREG is a secreted glycoprotein. Schähs et al (2008) have shown that CREG is predominantly localized within intracellular lysosomes. The intracellular CREG lacks an N-terminal peptide
