This cyclic nonapeptide has been identified by phage display library screening (Essler and Ruoslahti, 2002). It is a homing peptide that homes to normal breast tissue and binds to the blood vessels in the breast, but not in other tissues. Binding is seen also with the vasculature of hyperplastic and malignant lesions in transgenic breast cancer mice. The homing peptide has been shown to bind to aminopeptidase P from malignant breast tissue. Antibodies against aminopeptidase P inhibit in vitro binding and in vivo homing.
Myrberg et al (2008) have reported that a fusion peptide of CPGPEGAGC and pVEC, coupled to the anticancer drug chlorambucil, is taken up by breast cancer cells and increases the efficacy of chlorambucil.
