[Caspase activated nuclease] The cDNA for this 40 kDa endonuclease has been cloned from Jurkat cells. The enzyme is activated by caspases, degrades naked DNA, and induces apoptotic morphology and DNA fragmentation in naive nuclei. CPAN and the murine nuclease, CAD are considered homologous. The activity of human CPAN is regulated by the 45 kDa subunit of the DNA fragmentation factor DFF and is identical with the 40 kDa subunit of the DNA fragmentation factor DFF.
