[chlamydial protease-like activity factor] CPAF is a protein produced by the obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen Chlamydia (Zhong et al, 2001; Dong et al, 2005). The protein is secreted into the host cell cytosol and is both necessary and sufficient for the degradation of host transcription factors essential for MHC class I and II antigen presentation (Zhong et al, 2001; Dong et al, 2004). Proteolytic activation of CPAF yields two fragments that must heterodimerize to be biologically active (Dong et al, 2004). Chen D et al (2010) have reported that CPAF, which is produced as a proenzyme, can undergo autoprocessing and self-activate itself in Chlamydia-infected cells.
