COMP-Ang1 is a mutein of Angiopoietin-1 generated by replacing the N-terminal portion of Angiopoietin-1 with the short coiled-coil domain of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Unlike the parent molecule, the mutein is a soluble, stable, and potent Angiopoietin-1 variant. It is more potent than native Angiopoietin-1 in phosphorylating its receptor (TIE-2) in primary cultured endothelial cells, enhancing angiogenesis in vitro and increasing adult angiogenesis in vivo. In irradiated mice, intravenous administration of COMP-Ang1 protects against radiation-induced apoptosis in microcapillary endothelial cells
